Tongue Cancer: Warning Signs That Should Not Be Ignored

Tongue Cancer develops when abnormal cells grow within the tissues of the tongue. Depending on its location, it may affect the visible part of the tongue or develop farther back near the throat. Early symptoms can sometimes resemble minor mouth ulcers or injuries, making timely evaluation particularly important when symptoms persist.

One possible sign of Tongue Cancer is a sore or ulcer on the tongue that does not heal. Other symptoms may include an unexplained lump, persistent pain, bleeding, difficulty moving the tongue, numbness, discomfort while swallowing, or a red or white patch. Some patients may also experience persistent throat discomfort or a lump in the neck.

Tobacco consumption, including smoking and smokeless tobacco, is an important risk factor for oral cancers. Heavy alcohol consumption may further increase risk. However, symptoms should be evaluated based on clinical findings rather than risk factors alone, as oral cancer can also occur in people without an obvious history of tobacco use.

When Tongue Cancer is suspected, examination and biopsy are important for confirming the diagnosis. Imaging tests may then be recommended to determine the extent of the disease and whether nearby lymph nodes or other structures are involved.

Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of approaches. The treatment plan depends on the cancer's location, stage, and other individual factors. Rehabilitation may also help with speech, swallowing, and nutritional needs after treatment.

Dr Prashant Mullerpatan provides evaluation and treatment planning for patients diagnosed with tongue and other oral cancers, with management tailored to the individual condition.
