Cheek Cancer: Symptoms, Risk Factors, and the Importance of Early Diagnosis

Cheek Cancer is a type of oral cancer that develops in the tissues lining the inside of the cheek. It may initially appear as a small sore, white or red patch, thickened area, or persistent ulcer. Because these symptoms can resemble common mouth problems, they may sometimes be ignored during the early stages. However, any unusual change inside the mouth that does not heal within a few weeks should be medically evaluated.

Tobacco use is one of the major risk factors associated with Cheek Cancer. Smoking, chewing tobacco, gutkha, and other forms of smokeless tobacco can repeatedly expose oral tissues to harmful substances. Heavy alcohol consumption and certain other factors may also increase the risk. In some patients, persistent irritation or unexplained oral changes may lead to further investigation.

Diagnosis generally begins with an examination of the mouth and surrounding areas. If a suspicious lesion is identified, a biopsy may be performed to examine the tissue. Imaging investigations may also be advised to understand the size and extent of the disease.

Treatment depends on the location, stage, size, and spread of the cancer, along with the patient's overall health. Surgery may be used to remove the affected tissue, while radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be recommended in selected cases. Reconstructive procedures and rehabilitation may also form part of treatment when required.

Dr Prashant Mullerpatan evaluates patients with suspected or diagnosed oral cancers and plans treatment according to individual clinical findings. Early assessment can help identify the condition at a stage when more treatment options may be available.
