Cheek Cancer in Mahim, Mumbai: Early Signs That Need Proper Evaluation

Cheek cancer can begin with a change inside the mouth that initially looks like an ordinary ulcer, patch or area of irritation. Many minor mouth problems heal naturally, but an abnormal area that persists, increases in size or repeatedly causes discomfort deserves closer attention. Recognising this difference is particularly important because oral cancer symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for dental problems or routine mouth sores.

Cheek cancer generally develops in the inner lining of the cheek, also called the buccal mucosa. Tobacco exposure, particularly smokeless tobacco, is an important risk factor for oral cancers. However, the presence or absence of a known risk factor should not be used to decide whether a persistent mouth lesion needs examination.

Possible warning signs include an ulcer that does not heal, a persistent red or white patch, unexplained bleeding, thickening of the cheek, numbness, pain, difficulty chewing or reduced ability to open the mouth. Some people may also notice a lump in the neck. These symptoms can occur for reasons other than cancer, so examination is necessary to determine their actual cause.

A short-lived ulcer following accidental biting is different from an abnormality that remains in the same place and gradually changes. Instead of repeatedly applying gels or home remedies, patients should pay attention to how long the lesion has been present and whether its appearance or symptoms are changing.

How Is Cheek Cancer Evaluated in Mahim, Mumbai?

Evaluation usually begins with examination of the mouth and neck. The doctor assesses the location, appearance and extent of the suspicious area and asks about symptoms, habits and how long the problem has been present.

When an abnormal area needs further investigation, a biopsy may be advised. A small tissue sample is examined by a pathologist to determine whether cancer cells are present.

If cancer is confirmed, additional investigations may be required to understand the tumour's size, depth and relationship with nearby structures. Lymph nodes in the neck may also need assessment.

This information contributes to staging and treatment planning. Treatment is not determined merely by seeing a lesion inside the cheek. Doctors need to know the exact diagnosis and extent of disease before deciding what approach is appropriate.

Surgery can have an important role in suitable cases of cheek cancer. The extent of surgery depends on the size and location of the tumour and whether surrounding structures are involved. Where removal of a larger amount of tissue is necessary, reconstruction may also become part of treatment planning. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy or other oncological treatments may be recommended in certain situations.

Patients preparing for a cancer consultation should carry previous biopsy reports, scans, blood investigations and details of earlier treatment if these are available. It is also useful to explain when the lesion was first noticed and how it has changed.

Dr Prashant Mullerpatan in Mahim provides evaluation and surgical oncology care for patients with oral and other cancers in Mumbai. Treatment recommendations are made after considering examination findings, pathology and the extent of disease.

A persistent cheek abnormality should not automatically be assumed to be cancer, but it should not be ignored either. Proper evaluation can establish the cause and determine whether observation, additional investigation or cancer treatment is required.
